Loretta’s Ginger Cracked Top Cookies

The story behind the recipe:

I inherited some books filled with handwritten recipes after my grandmother passed and we cleaned out her house. As I went through the recipes I discovered this are from her second husband’s family. Loretta was his mother.


Ingredients:

1 cup shortening
1 cup Sugar
1 egg
1 cup molasses
2 tsp soda
½ tsp salt
¼ tsp ginger
½ tsp cinnamon
¼ tsp cloves
¼ tsp vanilla


How to make it:

Preheat oven to 350°F.

Cream sugar and shortening. Stir in molasses, then egg.
Stir in dry ingredients. (The following is added by me based on experiment):

Chill dough, then form into balled of about 2 tablespoons is size, roll in sugar and place on cookie sheet. Bake about 10 minutes.
